SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University invites applications for the 2025-2026 Chief Resident position.
Role of the Position
The SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Department of Pediatrics is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief Resident for the academic year July 2025-June 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of our pediatric training program and to serve as a critical liaison between the resident and the department. There are currently 83 pediatrics residents in our program.
Candidates should have a strong academic record as well as excellent interpersonal, clinical, administrative and leadership skills. They must have a commitment to teaching, mentorship and have a genuine interest to be a chief resident. Candidates must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited residency in pediatrics by the preferred start date of July 1, 2025.
Our residency program generally has 4 chief residents that work closely with program leadership and are important members of the leadership team. The chief resident has a faculty appointment and serves an important role in the program and the department.
Pediatric Chief Resident Job Description
Clinical Responsibilities
- Supervising and supporting pediatric residents in various clinical settings.
- Mentoring pediatric residents and medical students.
- Home call- one week per month.
- Week-end call- one weekend per month.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate and maintain the resident master schedule, monthly rotation schedule and the resident call and clinic schedules that are all in alignment with the ACGME requirements.
- Work closely with program leadership in the following:
- Scheduling and coordinating all resident educational didactic sessions and conferences.
- Participating in residency recruitment.
- Planning and executing first year resident orientation.
- Assisting in day-to-day operations of the pediatric residency program.
- Monitor resident performance and help address performance issues.
- Helping improve and evaluate both educational and clinical curriculum.
- Serve as liaison between faculty, clinical services, hospital administration, COM, residents and the program.
- Participating in weekly residency leadership meetings.
Professional Development
- This will include adequate time to study for and take the American Board of Pediatrics General Certifying exam.
- Adequate time and support to attend the regional and national APPD conferences and other professional and national meetings.
- Other professional development opportunities identified by the chief resident perhaps including participation is School of Public Health programs.
Requirements for Position
- Must have successfully completed or be a current PGY3 pediatric resident in good standing with an ACGME-accredited training program
- Must have taken or be eligible to take the American Board of Pediatrics certifying exam in 2025
- Should be available to start as Chief Resident July 1, 2025
- Must be a US citizen or EAD.

The Pediatric residency program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is located in Brooklyn, New York. Our residency program is comprised of four hospitals that serve as integral training sites: SUNY University Hospital at Downstate (UHD) which serves as the academic center, Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) is a renowned large municipal hospital on the east coast, South Brooklyn Health a municipal hospital which serves as a safety net hospital for patients lacking other access to health care in South Brooklyn, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center, a world class cancer center located in Manhattan.
The University Hospital at Downstate is the home of the Children’s Hospital at Downstate which is a referral center for such services as pediatric surgery and pediatric subspecialties, pulmonary physiology, endoscopy, renal transplantation and dialysis, chemotherapy, and neonatal critical care; it serves a general pediatric service to provide medical care to the community of middle-class patients in the East Flatbush area. Kings County Hospital Center is one of the Level 1 trauma centers in Brooklyn, it receives acute care referrals from other Brooklyn institutions and also serves as an international referral center for families who have connections with immigrant populations in Brooklyn.
The important elements of our training program include a diverse patient population, variety of pathology, commitment to addressing health disparities in Brooklyn communities through community, advocacy, and engagement. Our program has strengths in academics and research, with a vast majority of faculty participating in research. Residents interested in research have the opportunity to work alongside faculty and fellows as well as present their work at regional and national conferences.
Most of our subspecialties have fully accredited ACGME fellowship programs. Our faculty, therefore, display considerable depth with respect to their expertise. Our faculty are dedicated and committed educators who place priority on the teaching of residents and medical students. Particular attention is given to the humanistic, social, and ethical aspects of the practice of pediatrics, as well as the acquisition of academic knowledge and the intellectual challenges of pediatrics.
