- Confronting Racism: Hosted by the APPD Confronting Racism Action Team
In the last couple of years, the need for antiracism training in medical education has been highlighted. However, many of the trainings have been geared towards trainees. The Confronting Racism Action Team will be presenting an interactive pre-conference workshop on creating a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bootcamp for faculty. This workshop will give an overview of the impact of structural racism on medicine as well as the institute of medical education. Participants will be introduced to various topics that faculty can be taught or reminded of to ensure that their programs embrace the culture of anti-racism. These topics include eliminating bias in LOR/evaluations, microaggressions and bias in feedback, as well as how to move from being a bystander to an upstander for both trainees and colleagues. Participants will be able to take the tools and information from this workshop back to their home institutions to create an antiracism/DEI bootcamp for their faculty members.

- Designing A Publishable Research Project – Intro to Research Methodologies: Hosted by the APPD Research and Scholarship Learning Community
This session will be a highly interactive, team-based workshop that will help with the implementation, design, and analysis of surveys for internal improvement in your program. This session is designed for both the beginner interested in learning the principles of survey design and intermediate participants who are interested in honing skills in analysis and publication. Topics to be discussed are indications for appropriate use of surveys, guiding principles of survey design, reliability and validity, common pitfalls, and response optimization. Paired facilitators are experts in utilizing survey-based research principles in local and national research projects and will share practical examples, experienced challenges, and strategies to transform your current research interests and/or “survey-in-progress” to a more refined format. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in mini break-out sessions to maximize engagement with different facilitators and participants that will allow for diverse perspective on the development and/or refinement of existing scholarly projects. Participants will leave the session with feedback about their ideas and/or projects and a resource guide.

- Beyond Global Health Pathways: Career Development in Global Pediatrics: Hosted by the APPD Global Health Learning Community
Ninety percent of the world’s children are cared for by 10% of the world’s pediatricians. There is great need to increase the pediatric workforce to serve and study global and domestic underserved populations. While studies show that there are increasing numbers of pediatric residents who as passionate about global child health, common barriers to successfully integrating these interests into professional careers include time and financial constraints, family and personal obligations, lack of institutional or administrative buy-in, lack of mentorship, medical education requirements, and lack of protected time to be away. In many cases, pediatricians and faculty advisors simply do not know how to guide trainees to incorporate global child health into their careers, or what opportunities exist for collaboration and mentorship. Our session is designed to equip faculty members who support trainees passionate about caring for underserved children in the United States and abroad. Faculty will be introduced to tools that will help facilitate mentoring moments and relationships geared towards assisting trainees to connect their passions with concrete career development plans. Faculty will review examples of successful careers in global child health and gain strategies which will enable them to advise and coach residents interested in similar pursuits. Finally, this session will provide an opportunity for faculty to connect with each other and develop collaborations.
